Literally, osteoporosis means “porous” bone. Healthy bone tissue has a “honeycomb” pattern that is visible under a microscope. In normal bone, this pattern includes “gaps” where there is no tissue present, creating a structure that is strong but lighter than a solid mass of tissue would be. In osteoporosis, however, this strong structure is disrupted, with large, irregularly shaped gaps appearing where tissue has been lost.
