3D Mammograms Come to RMI | Tomosynthesis

A 3D Mammogram (Tomosynthesis) is a relatively new screening for women being offered by Regional Medical Imaging at our offices on Lennon Road, Flint and Novi.

We’re offering this as part of our array of women’s imaging tools to detect breast cancer. As stated in prior posts, one in eight women will develop breast cancer over the course of their lives. Mammography exams allow radiologists to detect possible abnormalities at early stages when it’s most treatable.

    How does 3D Mammography Work?

Like a regular mammogram, tomosynthesis works by using low-dose x-rays to create an image of the inside of the breast. However, tomosynthesis does this by creating three dimensional (3D) images. While mammograms create two dimensional (flat) images, tomosynthesis creates a circular image by combining multiple image “slices” which can be viewed from many angles.

For women with dense breast tissue, detecting issues with a mammogram is problematic – as illustrated picture of the same woman screened with 2D and 3D mammography. 3D tomosynthesis provides more detailed images, so our radiologists can more readily spot problems. Your physician will work with you to determine the best imaging exam for you.

    Tomosynthesis Cost

The cost for tomosynthesis is $60 in addition to the standard fee for our UltimateMamm™ (2D mammogram). Annual 2D mammograms are a covered benefit with insurances.

    A comfortable mammogram?

In a future post, we’ll talk about the tomosynthesis machines being installed at RMI, and how they can alleviate fears about a painful mammogram. We’ll also introduce you to our team of women’s imaging experts ready to work with you and your physician.
